What Is the Jamaica Jerk Championship?
The Jamaica Jerk Championship is a judged cooking competition. Its goal is to set a formal standard for jerk in Jamaica, where jerk was born. The organizers put it this way: Champagne answers to Champagne and bourbon answers to Kentucky, so jerk should answer to Jamaica, with Jamaicans setting the standard.
The weekend has two parts:
- The Championship is closed to the public and judged. Ten cooks are chosen on merit, with contestants drawn from across Jamaica. Judges taste each entry once and score it on execution and technique, and they also check that it's true to jerk tradition. The winner receives a $10,000 grand prize, which the organizers describe as the largest ever offered in a Jamaican jerk competition.
- The Jerk Experience is open to the public with a ticket. It runs alongside the competition on Saturday, December 5, with a village of chefs, local producers and hospitality partners. There will be tastings, live-fire demonstrations on the Heritage Demo Kitchen stage, and drinks built around rum and rosé.
The whole weekend is limited to about 500 guests: 80 VIP multi-day passes and 420 general admission tickets. The organizers kept it small on purpose so the focus stays on the cooking and the people doing it.
We're proud to host the Championship at The Cliff Hotel and to serve as its Presenting Sponsor.
Meet the Judges: James Beard Award Winners and More
Five chefs and pitmasters make up the judging panel, and most of them were born in Jamaica.
James Beard Award winners on the panel
- Rodney Scott. Pitmaster behind Rodney Scott's BBQ (Charleston, Birmingham and Atlanta) and Chief's on Broadway in Nashville. He won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southeast in 2018, only the second pitmaster ever to win a James Beard chef award. His cookbook is Rodney Scott's World of BBQ.
- Andrew Black. Born in rural Jamaica, he is chef-owner of Grey Sweater in Oklahoma City and also runs Black Walnut, Gilded Acorn and Perle Mesta at the Skirvin Hilton. He won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest in 2023 for Grey Sweater. He started his career in Jamaica's resort kitchens, so judging this event brings him back to where he began.
Also judging
- Nicola Blaque. Born in Mandeville, Jamaica, she is chef-owner of The Jerk Shack in San Antonio. She was a James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef: Texas in 2023, and her restaurant earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand. She is also a U.S. Army veteran.
- Andre Fowles. Born and raised in Kingston. He is Bruce Springsteen's personal chef, a three-time champion on Food Network's Chopped, and author of My Jamaican Table (2026). He has cooked dinners at the James Beard House.
- Dae Kim. Chef of Noksu in New York City. He trained at Per Se and became the youngest chef in New York City history to earn a Michelin star at his own restaurant.
Weekend host (not a judge)
- Adrian Miller, "the Soul Food Scholar." He has won two James Beard Book Awards: in 2014 for Soul Food and in 2022 for Black Smoke. As the weekend's Cultural Correspondent, he'll tell the story of jerk from its Maroon roots to how it's cooked in Jamaica today.
According to the organizers, all five judges will be there all weekend, including at every VIP event and on the demo kitchen stage during The Jerk Experience.
Championship Weekend Schedule
- Friday, December 4: Judges and VIP guests arrive, and there's a welcome reception. That evening, the Respect The Jerk Community Concert takes place at WAVZ on Seven Mile Beach and is open to the wider Negril community. Concert tickets go on sale October 1, 2026.
- Saturday, December 5: The Championship, The Jerk Experience (9am–4pm), awards and a concert.
- Sunday, December 6: Farewell brunch.
The event goes ahead rain or shine. The organizers plan more than 12,500 square feet of tents across the property for the competition, dining and guests.
Tickets
All event tickets are sold on the official Championship tickets page:

A Short History of Jerk in Jamaica
Jerk is Jamaica's best-known dish and one of its most important cooking traditions. Most accounts trace it to the Maroons, Africans who escaped slavery and built free communities in Jamaica's mountains, including the Blue Mountains. Using the island's own ingredients, they developed a way to season, preserve and slow-cook meat over fire in hard conditions.
Over generations, the method spread across the island. It's built on pimento (allspice), Scotch bonnet peppers and long hours over the fire, and it's cooked in backyards, at roadside stands and at family gatherings. As Jamaicans moved abroad, jerk went with them, and it's now loved and reinterpreted around the world. The Championship's slogan, Respect the Jerk. Honor Jamaica., is about returning the definition of great jerk to the people and the place that created it.
Make a Weekend of It at The Cliff Hotel
The Cliff Hotel sits on five clifftop acres on Negril's West End, facing west over the Caribbean Sea. When you're not at the event, here's how to spend your time:
- Sunset on the Cliff Deck. Negril's West End is known for its sunsets, and cocktails on the Cliff Deck are the classic way to watch the sun go down over the Caribbean Sea.
- Swim from the cliffs. Our clifftop pools and hand-carved cliff ladders take you straight down into the Caribbean Sea.
- Snorkeling and boat trips. See the coastline from the water.
- KiYara Spa. A couples treatment is a good way to recover after a full Saturday of smoke and fire.
- Dining under the almond tree. The Restaurant at The Cliff Hotel is the place for a slower evening after the event.
- Private cave dining. For a celebration or a quiet night for two, consider private cave dining at The Cliff Hotel, a one-of-a-kind setting at the edge of the Caribbean Sea.
- Worthy Park Estate rum tastings. We hold scheduled tastings of this Jamaican rum. Ask us which dates fall around championship weekend.
