Three days ago, Jamaica's Deputy Director of Tourism, Philip Rose shared an observation that has stayed with me:
“Everything begins with demand.” - Philip Rose
The statement is deceptively simple, yet it captures one of the most important conversations currently taking place in Negril.
On May 21, Minister Edmund Bartlett addressed stakeholders in Negril and outlined the Government of Jamaica’s vision for the future of Greater Negril. The presentation included US$11-billion in planned infrastructure investments designed to improve roads, utilities, public services, and the overall visitor experience.
The scale of that commitment is impressive and important. Infrastructure creates access. It improves quality of life for residents, strengthens the visitor experience, and lays the foundation for future growth. Yet the Minister also made an observation that deserves equal attention:
While government can invest in infrastructure, it is ultimately the responsibility of local stakeholders to create reasons for people to come to Negril.
In other words, infrastructure creates capacity. Demand creates destinations.
This distinction matters because great destinations are rarely built solely through construction. People do not choose a place because a road was widened or a utility upgraded. They choose a place because something captures their imagination. A story. An event. A cultural experience. A memory shared by a friend. A reason to visit that feels compelling enough to move from thought to action.
Negril already possesses extraordinary assets. Few places in the Caribbean combine the natural beauty of Seven Mile Beach, the character of the West End, a rich culinary heritage, and a globally recognized culture of music, hospitality, and creativity. What Negril requires is not reinvention. It requires continued rediscovery. That responsibility belongs to all of us.
At The Cliff, we increasingly view our role as extending beyond operating a hotel. We believe hospitality businesses have a responsibility to contribute to the vitality of the destinations in which they operate. Creating demand means creating experiences that encourage people to discover Negril for the first time or to rediscover it through a new lens.
Walk The Cliff was created from a belief that Jamaica’s creative talent deserves both a stage and a pathway. The event brings together established designers, emerging talent, industry leaders, and members of the Jamaican diaspora in a setting that celebrates both fashion and place. For some, it is an opportunity to return home and reconnect with Jamaica through creativity and culture. For others, it is a chance to learn directly from those who have successfully built careers in the industry. Beyond the runway itself, Walk The Cliff is intended to inspire the next generation of Jamaican designers by demonstrating what is possible while creating opportunities for mentorship, visibility, and meaningful professional relationships. In doing so, it creates another reason to discover Negril while showcasing the creativity that has long been one of Jamaica’s greatest exports.
The Jamaica Jerk Championship reflects a similar philosophy. While Jamaica has many vibrant jerk celebrations, the Championship introduces a judged culinary format designed to recognize craft and excellence within a nationally and internationally credible framework. By bringing together accomplished competitors, respected judges, media, and culinary leaders, the event creates a platform capable of elevating one of Jamaica’s most iconic culinary traditions while attracting new audiences to Negril. The participation of celebrity chefs and recognized culinary personalities further amplifies that message, bringing visibility, credibility, and attention that extends far beyond the event itself. Their involvement helps ensure that conversations about Jamaican cuisine, culinary craftsmanship, and Negril as a destination reach audiences that might otherwise never have engaged with them. More importantly, it creates another reason for travelers, food enthusiasts, media, and industry professionals to place Negril on their calendar.
The Negril Culinary Classic is being developed from a similar belief. Around the world, some of the most successful destination events have used food as a catalyst for discovery, drawing visitors who are interested not only in where they travel, but in how a place expresses itself through hospitality, culture, and cuisine. Communities such as Nantucket, Charleston, Aspen, and Healdsburg have all benefited from culinary gatherings that extend beyond dining and help define the identity of the destination itself. Our vision for the Negril Culinary Classic is to create a platform that celebrates Jamaica’s culinary talent while bringing together both international and local chefs, local restaurateurs, producers, hospitality leaders, and guests in a way that strengthens Negril’s reputation as one of the Caribbean’s most distinctive places to gather around a table. In doing so, it creates another reason for visitors to return, for new audiences to discover the destination, and for local talent to gain visibility on a larger stage.
These initiatives are different in form, but they share a common purpose. They create demand.
As infrastructure improvements continue and investment flows into the region, Negril has an opportunity to strengthen not only its physical assets, but its cultural and experiential ones as well. The destinations that thrive over the coming decades will be those that continually give people new reasons to visit, return, and share their experiences with others.
My position is this:
Roads matter. Airports matter. Utilities matter. Public investment matters. But destinations are ultimately chosen with the heart, before they are reached by the road.
A fan hears about a remarkable event. A family decides to return for a celebration. A couple discovers a new tradition. A few friends gathers around a shared experience. Those decisions create hotel bookings, restaurant reservations, jobs, investment, and economic activity. Everything else follows.
As Philip rightfully observed, "everything begins with demand".
And creating that demand is a responsibility shared by everyone who believes in the future of Negril.
